Project: Have your team identify a human physical or social problem faced during long duration space exploration within our Sun’s solar system and propose a solution.

The team narrowed their focus to two topics faced during long duration space exploration. Oxygen, and Anxiety. These are still very broad topics. The plan was to research problems and solutions in these two areas that currently exist. Then brainstorm ways to improve upon an existing solution or a completely innovative solution.

Monday each team member will share what they found in their Field Research from the last meeting.

What are three interesting facts you learned about the problem?

Are there any solutions that currently exist for this problem and why aren’t they working well enough?

What are three possible ways to improve the existing solutions? What ideas do you have for completely new solutions to the problem?

Monday we will also be continuing Robot build and Mission Planning. Wednesday the team will choose their research project topic.

I would love to include more parents in our team meetings. I have created a sign-up genius for the rest of the meetings. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409084aaca72aa7f85-parent

Last week was FLL Jr’s first official meeting. We talked about core values and the kids wrote and drew a picture spotlighting the core value that means the most to them.

The kids were divided into three teams and chose their team names.

Next week, the teams will discuss what they need to bring to the moon. They will also be building their spacecraft.

Download and study game manual here: https://goo.gl/BF3DsU

New members bring in signed last 5 pages from the member handbook.

Use the game pieces that Coach Seb handed out and prototype some mechanisms using stuff from around the house to pick up, carry or transfer the game pieces from one place to another.

Research on YouTube, looking for Rover Ruckus in 2 days and see what those teams have come up with. Also search for First Res-Q and see what teams used to pick up these same game pieces.

If you are interested in learning Solidworks 3D CAD modeling, check out this playlist which explains what Solidworks is and has a few tutorial videos: https://goo.gl/ivkXGV

If you have access to a laptop that you would like to run Solidworks on, bring it in this week and we will get Solidworks loaded up.

2 members from each sub-team will be chosen each meeting to take notes for the engineering notebook. No exceptions.

FTC Update 9/8/2018 – Rover Ruckus Game Reveal

   September 8, 2018

Today was the 2018 FTC Rover Ruckus reveal and the team so far seems very excited for this seasons game. As well the team has been coming up with some amazing designs for this seasons robot.

From what we have discussed we are thinking of using treads for a replacement for the wheels and we are also thinking of having more than one arm to help use climb which we think it will make the robot more stable climbing.

Reviving an old CNC Router – Intro

Many years ago, our school district used to have CNC class in the high school. As many school district got away from teaching technical course, some of these machine stay behind collecting dust in storage and just not being used anymore.

When we started our robotics club, we got lucky enough to put our hands on 3 of these machines.  It included the following:

  • a CNC mill,
  • a CNC lathe,
  • and a CNC router.

Because of its versatility and potential for many uses, we decided that we will rebuild our CNC router first and see if it’s worth it.

This blog is about sharing what we are doing and hoping that maybe an other team or CNC hobbyist can learn from our mistakes and get their project under way.

Ours is a Light Machine CNC Router. It has 3 axis using stepper motor and a Bosch 1617 Router.

This is what we have done so far:

Basically, the Power supply was mounted(using velcro strip) in the old control box. This allow us to use the existing bracket and screw holes right into the machine frame.

We then rewire the main switch to power the power supply unit. This in turn is connected to the G540. We tested all axis motor and found that they all work. Therefore we used the provided DB9 connector and solder the motor cable and wires into the new DB 9. We plugged in the G540 and using Mach3 were able to move each axis as they were designed.

NOTE: because the motor amperage is rated at 2.9A, we will need to put a current limiter resistor on the DB 9 connector. For more info on that read the G540 instruction manual.

To connect our Window XP parallel port to the G540, we used a DB 25 25 pin serial port cable male to male RS232 from Amazon. In retrospect, if you order one, pick a longer than 6ft cable as it limit the computer location for setup.

STEM Camp 2018

Shelby Woods, a team member of the Algonac Robotics FRC team, organized the team’s first STEM camp.  Day one was all about team names, getting to know each other, and BRIDGES!  We learned about different types of bridges.  Each camper then got to build a marshmallow bridge and test its strength with pennies.  This was day one of  the three day camp, and we can’t wait to see what our campers will learn next!

FLL Mentor Camp 2018

Algonac Robotics FRC Members attended our first, two day FLL (FIRST LEGO League) Mentor Camp this week to prepare for the upcoming INTO ORBIT challenge.  This will be the FLL Iron Rats third year as a team and we are looking forward to having our FRC team members mentor our team.  During the camp we built a simple robot, learned some coding basics, and discussed FLL in general.  We also talked through what the Mentors roll would be.  FLL teams compete with an autonomous LEGO robot of their own creation, to complete a series of missions for competition.  They are also challenged to come up with an innovative solution to a real world problem and present it not only to the judges during competition but also those who might benefit from their solution before competition.  They are also tasked with learning and using the FIRST Core Values as a team and out in their communities.  Having experienced mentors this season will be a big help for the team to be able to learn and grow so much more!
